Shirlee's Gingham Gown, 1978

Photobucket

Shirlee and Henry Fonda at home, 1978. photos by Gene Trindl.

Not to whine about the weather yet again (though I think getting 17 inches of snow in the last 24 hours is worth some sympathy), but I would much rather be wearing some softly romantic gown than layer upon layer of wool. There is something incredibly appealing about the Shirlee Fonda's gingham and eyelet maxi-dress here- maybe it's the girliness of the puff sleeves and pussycat bow or maybe it is the use of my favourite summer fabric, but I just find thinking about this dress quite often. I love how it looks charming on her, yet most would say a woman of her age (46 at the time) should never wear something so youthful. The length helps to make it more age appropriate, as does the neckline. One can just see her wearing this hostess gown to welcome friends into this lovely home for an afternoon of drinks by the pool...
