What you remember about James Maguire's apartment isn't the sleek platform and built-ins but the sunlight streaming in and the view of Central Park. To achieve this effect, Maguire built all the surfaces to windowsill height and lacquered them a shiny white. The bare windows are part of the pared-down look of the room. At night, the shades are pulled up from the bottom to create privacy from the street. Photo by Daniel Eifert and text by Egon von Furstenberg, scanned from The Power Look: Decorating for Men, 1980.
