there is a fantastic article by Texas Monthly (april 06) about the ball and it's history & societal impact in Laredo amidst the massive increase in drug violence along the Texas - Mexico border. it's really really fascinating, how important the ball has become, even though government workers and prominent members of society (very often the parents and grandparents of the young girls attending the ball) are at risk every day. Laredo is a fascinating place to begin with - it quite literally straddles two worlds.
