Sweet & Lowdown

Taking inspiration from depression-era films, such as Woody Allen's 1999 movie The Sweet and Lowdown, this editorial by Nicholas Lawn for TEST is a nostalgic romp around Brighton. While I always love this type of desaturated, cyan tinted photos, I'm interested to know whether film or digital was shot. Photoshop filters and certain iPhone apps have made it so easy to ape film effects like this that I think a lot of people no longer understand the inherent beauty of film. Regardless these images are a welcome change from most magazine editorials as the softer, more realistic clothes, make-up and hair are definitely appealing in a world of over retouching.

  1. So beautiful. I can't wait to be back there this weekend...

I do hope they used film rather than digital. It's going to become a lost art soon enough...
